A community garden is built on a plot of land where people can plant and grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs. They could be built in allotments or school gardens. The food grown can be shared with families, friends and others in the community. Some communities grow things in a garden to help their neighborhood look nicer. Building a community garden is a great way to bring everyone together. It’s sociable, fun and full of laughter.

Community gardens come in all shapes and sizes. They can be as small as a raised bed on a school field or as large as a couple of acres outside of town. They may be located on land owned by nonprofits, government agencies or gardeners. In some community gardens, a gardener might look after his or her own plot, but other gardeners work cooperatively on group plots and then share in the harvest.

A community garden might be a space for people to grow their own fruit, vegetables and herbs that they can eat themselves or give to the local community. Building a garden can promote healthy living by serving others in their community such as foodbanks.

When community gardens are in urban areas one of the main problems is city pollution. It causes problems for the soil beacause it can often become toxic from years of industrial activities and vehicle exhaust. Higher levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere is one of the major causes of the greenhouse effect which generally raises average yearly temperatures. Two days of hot dry weather can destroy a garden if left untended.
